World Mosquito Day
World Mosquito Day is observed annually on August 20th. On that day, in 1897, the British doctor Ronald Ross established that female Anopheles mosquitoes are vectors for the Plasmodium parasite, responsible for the disease malaria, and transmit it between humans.
In memory of this great discovery, World Mosquito Day is celebrated every year. The ability to transmit infectious diseases to humans puts mosquitoes at the top of the list of the deadliest animals in the world. In addition to transmitting the causative agents of malaria, mosquitoes transmit the causative agents of numerous other diseases: dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya, Zika virus infection, various types of encephalitis and other diseases.
